Somatic Therapy for Emotion Regulation
Somatic Therapy in BC
Somatic therapy explores the connection between your emotions, thoughts, and physical experiences. Rather than only focusing on what is happening in your mind, we pay attention to how stress, anxiety, and past experiences may show up in your body.
By developing greater awareness of these body-based signals and learning ways to regulate your nervous system, therapy can help you feel more grounded and connected and respond to difficult emotions with greater ease.
In session, we will explore sensations such as tension, heaviness, restlessness, or feeling disconnected from your body.
Somatic therapy can be helpful for people who:
Feel overwhelmed by their emotions
Frequently experience anxiety or tension
Struggle with emotional awareness
Feel stuck in patterns of fight, flight, freeze or shutdown
Your body can provide useful information about what you’re experiencing, and therapy can help you learn to listen to it without becoming overwhelmed by it.

How Does Somatic Therapy Look in Session?
Noticing Physical Sensations
In session, we might bring gentle attention to what you’re experiencing in your body. You may notice tension, heaviness, warmth, tightness, restlessness, or other physical sensations without needing to immediately change or explain them.
Developing this body awareness can help you better understand what you’re experiencing and what your body may be communicating.
Exploring Where Emotions Show Up In The Body
Emotions are not just experienced in our thoughts - they can also be felt physically. Together, we’ll explore where emotions show up in your body and what these sensations may be communicating. By becoming aware of these connections, you can better understand your emotional experiences and patterns.
Slowing Down & Increasing Awareness
Somatic therapy creates space to slow down and tune into your present-moment experience. With greater awareness of your body, thoughts, and emotions, you can recognize your needs and respond to yourself with more intention.
Breath & Grounding Exercises
Breathing and grounding techniques can help you reconnect with your body and the present moment when you’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or disconnected. These practical tools can support nervous system regulation, increase your sense of safety, and help you feel more grounded during difficult emotional experiences.
Learning To Recognize Signs of Activation
Our bodies often respond to stress before we consciously recognize what is happening. Somatic therapy can help you identify your individual signs of nervous system activation, such as muscle tension, a racing heart, restlessness, irritability, numbness, or shutting down.
Recognizing these signals earlier can make it easier to respond to stress before it becomes overwhelming.
Connecting Physical Sensations To Thoughts, Emotions & Patterns
Together we’ll explore the connections between physical sensations, emotional responses, behaviours, and patterns that may have developed over time. This awareness can create opportunities to develop new, more supportive ways of responding.
