What is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy
EMDR is a type of therapy that can help people process difficult or traumatic experiences that may still feel “stuck” in the mind and body.
During EMDR, you will be guided to briefly focus on distressing memories, thoughts, or feelings while engaging in gentle bilateral stimulation, such as following eye movements or alternating taps. This process helps the brain reprocess experiences so they feel less emotionally overwhelming.
EMDR doesn’t erase memories or make you forget what happened. Instead, it can help reduce the emotional intensity connected to these past experiences and support new, healthier ways of understanding what happened.
EMDR can be helpful for trauma, anxiety, distressing memories, negative self-beliefs, and other experiences that continue to impact you.
How does EMDR Work?
During sessions, I’ll guide you through briefly connecting with a difficult memory while using gentle bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or alternating taps. You remain in control throughout the process, and we work at a pace that feels safe and manageable for you.
As the memory is reprocessed, it can become less emotionally intense and feel more like something that happened in the past rather than something you are still experiencing in the present.
