How Attachment Useful in Therapy

I use an attachment-based approach to explore how early relationships and experiences shape the way we understand ourselves, connect with others, and navigate relationships today. Using attachment knowledge, we can explore the following patterns:

  • people-pleasing

  • fear of rejection

  • difficulty trusting

  • emotional disconnection

  • feeling anxious or avoidant in relationships

By developing a deeper understanding of where these patterns come from, therapy can help you build greater self-awareness, emotional security, and healthier ways of relating to yourself and others.

What is Attachment?

Attachment is the way we learn to connect with and relate to the people who matter most to us. From our earliest relationships, we begin developing expectations about closeness, trust, safety, and whether our needs will be met.

These experiences shape how we understand ourselves and others. They manifest as patterns that influence the way we navigate relationships throughout our lives.

Attachment Styles and Patterns

You may have heard of attachment styles such as secure, anxious, avoidant, or disorganized attachment. These concepts can offer a starting point for understanding how we tend to experience closeness, separation, trust, and emotional needs.

At the same time, attachment isn’t a box that defines you. Most of us experience different patterns in different relationships and circumstances. Our ways of relating can shift over time, and they can be influenced by our experiences, relationships, and what is happening in our lives today.

Why Do I Care to Explore My Attachment Style?

Through therapy, we can explore more than just what your attachment style is. We can unpack what happens to inside when I feel close to someone? What do I do when I feel rejected, misunderstood, or afraid of losing someone? What do I need from others, and how comfortable am I asking for it?

Exploring attachment can help us understand not only how we connect with others, but also how we have learned to connect with ourselves.

Curious to know more about your attachment patterns?

The goal isn’t to find a label for your way of relating. It’s to develop understanding, compassion, and choice in your relationships.
